The story of Sportr begins in 1990 when founder Arjen de Bruijne first arrived in Hong Kong. In a city full of opportunities and intensity his travel experience was marked not by excitement but by disappointment: broken luggage, poor protection and uncomfortable handling. His travel gear – the one companion he relied on most – failed him at the very moment it was needed. This frustration transformed into a purpose.

Arjen realised that premium travel bags should do more than carry belongings, they must protect what truly matters. From that defining moment onward the ambition was clear: to design and produce high-quality travel gear that combines exceptional durability, functional elegance and modern aesthetics.

From craftsmanship to brand vision

During his early years in Asia, Arjen visited advanced production facilities across China, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, working alongside experienced manufacturers in the bag industry. It was in the Fujian province where a lasting partnership was formed with master craftsman Philip Kwok. Philip understood our needs – it was not about mass production but about refined travel equipment that would raise the industry standards.

Together they spent more than twenty years developing premium travel bags, sports bags and protective luggage solutions for international brands. This long journey refined their expertise in materials, product innovation and functional design. It was the foundation for what would eventually become the new standard of Sportr gear.

With the later addition of partner Mark Chen, also originating from Fujian, the collaboration evolved into a unique East–West partnership built on trust, respect and shared values. While production excellence was mastered in Asia, brand identity and product innovation were shaped in Europe. This synergy created a unified global team focused on precision and purpose.

The birth of Sportr

In 2015, the Sportr brand was officially founded in the Netherlands and launched commercially in 2017. With decades of manufacturing experience behind it, Sportr entered the market not as a newcomer but as a matured brand with deep technical roots and a clear mission.

One year later followed the defining product: the Sportr Pro Golf Travel Bag, a benchmark in protective golf travel equipment.
